BJJ Black Belt Who Promoted Exercise Scientist Mike Israetel to Black Belt Defends His Promotion After Clumsy Clip Goes Viral

A recent viral video showing Dr. Mike Israetel, renowned exercise scientist and bodybuilder, rolling with another bodybuilder has sparked controversy in the Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu community. The clip, which depicted Israetel looking somewhat awkward on the mats, prompted questions about the legitimacy of his recent black belt promotion.

The Reddit thread titled “Brother who give this guy black belt? We have to check this” quickly gained traction, with many BJJ practitioners expressing skepticism about Israetel’s skills based on the short clip.

Josh Vogel, the instructor who promoted Israetel to black belt, was quick to address the controversy and provide context for what viewers were seeing.

“I gave Mike his black belt,” Vogel explained in a Reddit response. “This video was from a couple years ago when he was a brown belt, hadn’t trained BJJ in a year or so and was focused mainly on bodybuilding. In addition to that, he’s just having a fun roll with his buddy.”

Vogel emphasized that when Israetel trains consistently, “he is solid on the mat and capable of doing well with skillful black belts.” He noted that Israetel’s physique presents unique challenges for traditional jiu-jitsu movement.

“Because he is basically a solid ball of muscle, his joints don’t safely move the same way most people’s joints do, so he plays a very specific game that he understands well and has intelligent answers for the problems he comes across in those areas,” Vogel said.

The instructor further clarified that Israetel approaches BJJ primarily as a recreational activity rather than as a professional competitor. “Mike does BJJ as a fun hobby that he loves, and when he gets to include BJJ in his influencer life, he’s usually just goofing around and having fun for the cameras. He’s not a full-time BJJ person, but he’s good when he’s doing serious rolls.”

In follow-up comments, Vogel acknowledged the public scrutiny that comes with Israetel’s prominence but defended his student’s legitimacy. “He’s a public figure and it’s hard to know what’s going on behind the scenes, how he approaches stuff like this and what the intent of the videos are.”

Vogel praised Israetel as “a genuinely good guy” whose contributions to sports science and approach to good-faith discussion have been valuable. He noted that while Israetel now lives in Michigan, limiting their training time together, their rolls are “always a blast” – though he jokingly added, “as long as I’m not getting stacked.”

Dr. Israetel has built a significant following through his evidence-based approach to fitness and strength training. His background combines academic expertise in Sport Physiology with practical experience as both a bodybuilder and grappler. Throughout his BJJ journey, he has reportedly made training modifications to accommodate the demands of the sport, including temporarily adapting his leg training regimen to improve flexibility for triangle chokes.

The black belt promotion ceremony included support from notable figures in the BJJ community, including Dr. Christle and Will Starks, highlighting the respect Israetel has earned within the grappling community.
