BJJ Star Mica Galvão Scores Military Scholarship Securing His Future in the Sport

Brazilian jiu-jitsu phenom Mica Galvão has announced his induction into the Brazilian Army as a Third Sergeant, securing his athletic future through the military’s prestigious athlete program.

Galvão, who has already established himself as one of the sport’s brightest stars, shared the news via social media, where he appeared in uniform proudly displaying a gold medal. In his announcement, Galvão emphasized his patriotic motivations: “I did not enter for the money, I entered for a mission. I have always represented Brazil on the mats. Now, I also represent it in uniform.”

The Brazilian Army’s “Programa para Atletas de Alto Rendimento” (High-Performance Athletes Program), established in 2008 during President Lula’s administration in partnership with the Ministry of Sports, offers elite athletes comprehensive support including salary, housing, healthcare, and dental benefits. These benefits can extend to family members and continue throughout the athlete’s lifetime.

Galvão becomes only the second high-profile jiu-jitsu athlete to join Brazil’s armed forces through such a program, following Gabrieli Pessanha who previously enlisted with the Brazilian Air Force (FAB). Historically, the program primarily focused on Olympic sports, with many members of Brazil’s gymnastics and judo teams benefiting from military sponsorship.

The arrangement allows Galvão to continue competing professionally while representing both Brazil and the Brazilian Army in international competitions. He will also be eligible to participate in the Military World Games. Notably, the program permits athletes to maintain their existing sponsorship deals alongside military support.

In his statement, Galvão expressed his commitment to service beyond sports: “From now on, whenever my competitive calendar allows, I will make myself available to participate in the real missions that the Army carries out with excellence — whether supporting communities, solidarity missions or wherever the Brazilian people need it.”

For the jiu-jitsu community, this partnership represents another significant step in the sport’s growing legitimacy and recognition within Brazil’s athletic development system.
