That time Gordon Ryan dropped a free Kimura mini-instructional just to be petty to ATOS

One time, grappling superstar Gordon Ryan released a free technical breakdown analyzing a Kimura attack sequence, seemingly in response to his beef with ATOS. He seemed especially peeved at Lucas Barbosa’s failure to finish Yuri Simoes

Ryan, known for his technical prowess and outspoken personality, posted a detailed instructional video demonstrating multiple approaches to finishing a Kimura submission that Lucas apparently struggled with during competition.

“There was almost an infinite amount of solutions, an infinite amount of moves that Lucas could have gotten to, that were much better than the one that he actually attempted,” Ryan explains at the beginning of his impromptu lesson.

The world champion proceeds to demonstrate numerous technical options, including:

– Properly separating the hands by positioning the opponent flat on their back
– Transitioning to a back take by pushing toward the far hip
– Using the gi belt to trap the hand for better control
– Stepping inside the armpit to set up a Yoko Senkaku position
– Employing a “legs Kimura” variation
– Setting up quarter juji-gatame position with proper crossface control
– Converting to triangle choke options when the original submission fails

Throughout the instructional, Ryan doesn’t hold back his critique of the original attempt: “Lucas’s big mistake was that… He tried to step over with his right leg, and fall like an awkward retard. Or he went like this, and tried to get the leg up and over. This is no good.”

The BJJ community has come to expect these types of detailed breakdowns from Ryan, who frequently analyzes matches and techniques for UFC Invitational and is even capable of sidelining personal biases in technique analysis.

For technical enthusiasts, however, the breakdown provides valuable insights into advanced Kimura attacks regardless of the motivation behind its release.
