WATCH: Women’s pro soccer match turns into a scrap in Australia

A heated exchange erupted during a crucial A-League Women match between Brisbane Roar and Western Sydney Wanderers, resulting in two players being sent off in a dramatic confrontation.

The incident occurred with Brisbane leading 2-1 when Wanderers goalkeeper Shamiran Khamis deflected a strike that would have extended Roar’s advantage. As confusion arose over whether the resulting play should be a goal kick or corner, tensions quickly escalated.

Roar midfielder Laini Freier, frustrated by the situation, attempted to take the ball from Khamis. When the goalkeeper refused to surrender possession, Freier struck Khamis in the head, prompting players from both teams to rush into the fray.

Referee Molly Godsell immediately issued a red card to Freier, and in a controversial decision, also sent off Khamis, leaving fans perplexed about the equal punishment.

“Silly ref, only the player deserved a red, not the GK,” commented one spectator online.

Another added, “I’m so confused as to why Khamis got sent off? Insane decision from the ref.”

However, some observers noted that Khamis may have thrown an elbow into Freier’s face after being pushed, which could explain the referee’s decision to dismiss both players.

“Few people seem to be missing that Khamis threw an elbow into Freier’s face after getting pushed and then Freier retaliated to that. Both were definitely reds,” one fan pointed out.

Despite a hat-trick from Matildas star Tameka Yallop, who has now scored 12 goals this season, Brisbane couldn’t maintain their advantage after the confrontation. The match continued to swing dramatically with Western Sydney fighting back to eventually level the score.

The red card means Freier will miss Roar’s final match of the season against Melbourne Victory.

This incident comes at a critical time in the league, with Canberra securing the final playoff spot with a 1-0 win over Wellington, ending Brisbane’s A-League Women title hopes. Brisbane has now gone eight games without a win, collecting just two points during this disappointing stretch.
