Joey Diaz Reveals He’s Still Training Jiu-Jitsu: ‘I’d Rather Drill for a Long Time and Roll Once, Then Get the F— Out

Joey Diaz, the beloved comedian and podcast host, recently appeared on Joe Rogan Experience #2309 where he revealed that he continues to practice Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu despite some recent health challenges.

During the wide-ranging conversation with longtime friend Joe Rogan, Diaz opened up about his ongoing commitment to martial arts training, particularly Jiu-Jitsu, which he has pursued for years.

“I haven’t been to jiu-jitsu since November because I’ve been sick,” Diaz explained. “I had a bunch of problems and I was on antibiotics. I was having a hard time breathing. But I’m – I can’t wait to go back.”

Despite the setback, Diaz expressed enthusiasm about returning to training with a modified approach that better suits his current health situation.

“Now I’m going to go back and do it a little bit differently. Flow. Flow. A lot more flowing,” Diaz said, referring to the practice of “flow rolling” – a training method where practitioners move with less resistance to focus on technique rather than strength.

Diaz mentioned that he has a training partner at his gym who’s willing to accommodate this style.

“There’s one guy that’ll flow with me. He’s a cop.”

The comedian also discussed his approach to training, noting that he prefers classes that emphasize technical drilling over extended sparring sessions.

“They have a blue belt class. It’s basically a lot of drilling. You burn a lot of calories in that,” Diaz said. “Drilling is so important. But you have to go in the daytime, they roll a little bit more. At night, the classes are so shut that you don’t have time to roll that long. So, I would rather drill a long time and then roll once and get the out of it. That’s perfect for me.”

During the podcast, Diaz also touched on his recent health scare that landed him in the hospital with congestive heart failure and fluid retention. The experience has made him more health-conscious, further emphasizing the importance of his martial arts practice as part of his overall wellbeing.

For fans of Joey Diaz, his commitment to continuing his Jiu-Jitsu journey despite health challenges serves as an inspiration and testament to his resilience.
