In a recent social media exchange that has the combat sports world talking, Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu phenom Gordon Ryan doubled down on his assertion of being “the most decorated athlete in history,” sparking a lively debate among sports fans.
The conversation ignited when a follower challenged Ryan’s claim, suggesting that legends like Tiger Woods, Michael Jordan, Tom Brady, and others might deserve that distinction, while acknowledging Ryan as potentially the most decorated Jiu-Jitsu athlete.
Ryan, who has dominated the competitive grappling scene for years, responded confidently to the challenge.
“The only one you could really argue is Aleksandr Karelin based on his record,” Ryan wrote, referencing the legendary Russian Greco-Roman wrestler who went undefeated for 13 years in international competition.
Ryan then provided his perspective on his own career dominance: “My all time record would be somewhere around 1500-15 if I had to guess. There’s never been a more dominant athlete in any sport than myself I don’t think.”
The grappling ace elaborated on what sets him apart: “No one was so far ahead that they were calling subs to the minute, giving 10-1 odds on to the next best guy, and just generally dominating like me.”
The exchange appears to have originated from a playful video Ryan posted featuring influencer John Gioffre, where the two engaged in physical challenges. In the clip, Ryan performs wrestling movements while Gioffre rates his athleticism, giving him a “6.5” for a front roll and potentially a “7” for a cartwheel.
While Ryan’s competitive achievements in grappling are undeniable, his claim of being the most decorated athlete across all sports continues to generate discussion among sports historians and fans alike, with many pointing to the different metrics of success across various athletic disciplines.
Ryan concluded his response by inviting further discussion, writing, “I don’t keep up that well with sports, but if you have an actual example(s), would love to hear.”
This comes just after a month after Gordon Ryan slammed the NBA. He previously also claiming to have ‘carried USA in Sports’ for a decade which is also wildly overstating his importance in the grand scheme of things.
“My brother in Christ, no one that follows real sports knows who you are. Like at all… our sport is less popular than WNBA,” commented one user, highlighting the niche status of competitive grappling despite its growing popularity.
Gordon Ryan broke the internet with his latest jab at basketball. In a now-viral social media comment, Ryan shared a clip of LeBron James collapsing dramatically during an NBA game, captioned bluntly:
“What a gay sport this is.”
