Stipe Miocic’s manager used jiu jitsu to save his own life in an attack that took the lives of both his mother and grandmother

Jim Walter used his Brazilian jiu-jitsu training to survive a knife attack that claimed the lives of his mother and grandmother in July 2022. Now, as he continues his long journey toward recovery, his community is rallying behind him.

“Jim sent me a text from a hospital bed, thanking me for the jiu-jitsu techniques that saved his life,” recalls Jay Valko, Jim’s jiu-jitsu instructor and the organizer of a GoFundMe campaign to support his former student.

The attack left Jim with critical injuries to his sternum, heart, liver, head, ear, and eye. Despite these severe wounds, he managed to disarm his attacker—a testament to the effectiveness of his martial arts training in a life-or-death situation.

Walter was previously a manager in the MMA for a long period of time and has represented stars such as former UFC champions Chris Weidman, Stipe Miocic, and Anthony Smith.

For the past two years, Jim has been struggling to overcome both the physical and psychological trauma resulting from the incident. What should be the prime of his life has instead become a difficult path of recovery and rebuilding.

“Despite everything he’s been through, Jim is still resolved to reclaim the life that was almost taken from him,” Valko shares. “Jim is too proud to ask for help. I am asking for help on his behalf.”

The GoFundMe campaign aims to raise $50,000 to cover Jim’s mounting medical expenses, ongoing rehabilitation needs, basic living costs, and legal fees. So far, $6,000 has been donated toward the goal.

Those who know Jim describe his determination to move forward despite facing unspeakable tragedy. His story highlights not only the practical applications of Brazilian jiu-jitsu for self-defense but also the importance of community support during life’s most challenging moments.

“Every dollar and share will make a difference towards Jim’s recovery,” Valko emphasizes.

For those wishing to contribute to Jim Walter’s recovery fund, donations can be made through the GoFundMe page established by Jay Valko.
