WATCH: Brawl breaks out at BJJ tournament

A chaotic scene unfolded during a Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu tournament in Wichita Falls, Texas, when a competitive match suddenly escalated into physical confrontation.

The incident, which took place at Amped Mixed Martial Arts gym during what was meant to be a friendly local competition, was captured on video and has since drawn criticism from participants and spectators.

According to one competitor involved in the altercation, tensions rose when he claimed he was struck in the face twice during his match. What began as a standard grappling contest quickly deteriorated when one participant appeared to slap his opponent, leading to a reciprocal exchange and eventual intervention from bystanders.

“What was supposed to be a fun and supportive hometown tournament for my family turned into one of the most unprofessional experiences I’ve ever had in the jiu-jitsu community,” said the competitor, who wished to remain anonymous.

The video shows a referee, identified by participants as a coach at the hosting gym, attempting to manage the situation while holding a beverage cup. Critics pointed out this detail as emblematic of the event’s alleged lack of professionalism.

Further controversy emerged when accusations of rule violations were exchanged. The competitor claimed he was falsely accused of “greasing”.

“I take this sport seriously. I’ve competed many times and trained at gyms across Texas and New Mexico with nothing but respect for the sport and its rules,” the competitor stated.

The situation reportedly escalated further when, according to witnesses, heated words were exchanged between participants and officials.

Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu competitions typically operate under strict rules prohibiting striking of any kind, with infractions usually resulting in disqualification.

Despite the unfortunate turn of events, observers noted that many talented athletes participated in the tournament, which was intended to showcase the growing jiu-jitsu community in the region.
