WATCH: Craig Jones teaches Tom Aspinall Islam Makhachev’s D’Arce choke variation

In a recent training session captured on “The B-Team” channel, BJJ phenom Craig Jones was seen breaking down the intricacies of Islam Makhachev’s D’Arce technique to UFC interim heavyweight champion Tom Aspinall.

The instructional exchange revealed the methodical approach that makes Makhachev’s D’Arce choke so effective in MMA competition. Jones emphasized that the technique requires precision and proper sequencing rather than force.

“It’s hard to train it because you know, it’s hard to drill. I don’t want to get drill on me,” Jones explained during the demonstration, highlighting the technique’s effectiveness when properly executed.

Jones walked Aspinall through the mechanics, explaining that the choke doesn’t rely on knee pressure as much as utilizing the thigh. “You’re using more your thigh and everything in there and you’re just using the bump there,” Jones instructed as he positioned Aspinall for the demonstration.

The technical breakdown showed that contrary to what might seem intuitive, the D’Arce requires methodical setup rather than explosive movement. “That seems counterintuitive almost,” Aspinall noted, as Jones explained the proper positioning.

When demonstrating the finishing mechanics, Jones detailed how Makhachev executes the submission: “Those regular D’arces are coming all the way through there. I’ll be here. I drop the elbow and everything focuses on… Elbow down. Elbow pass. Pull up and ret.”

Aspinall, showing his eagerness to learn, asked for clarification: “Oh, so you like tightening it as it goes, like as you falling?” To which Jones confirmed, “Yeah, tight like elbows. Exactly.”
