Actor and television personality Mario Lopez recently stepped onto the mat to face off against Georgio Poullas, the creator of the viral “$1,000 takedown challenge.”
The 50-year-old Lopez, a Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu purple belt, showed impressive movement and technical skill during the friendly competition, drawing praise from professional MMA stars and fans alike.
“Fun battle my man! Imma get ready for round 2 :)”
Lopez commented on the video posted to social media, which has garnered thousands of likes and comments.
UFC’s Sean Strickland was among the impressed viewers, inviting Lopez to train in Las Vegas:
“We gotta get you to come train with us in Vegas!”
Former UFC champion Urijah Faber also chimed in with support, writing
“Mario still got it! CA wrestling 🔥.”
Poullas, a former state champion wrestler who has gained significant attention for his challenge series where he offers $1,000 to anyone who can successfully take him down, praised Lopez‘s performance:
“Bro Is Super Talented 🤼♂️ Had A Lot of Fun With This!”
The challenge has previously attracted high-profile athletes including UFC bantamweight contender Marlon Vera, who admitted during a podcast appearance with Poullas that even he would struggle with the challenge.
“I don’t think I can take you down,” Vera told Poullas. “I mean it would be easier if I dive under a leg and go for a heel hook… but pure wrestling I know I won’t take you down, that’s a fact.”
MMA referee Mike Beltran congratulated Lopez on his performance, commenting
“Way to represent TEAM 50’s @mariolopez. Excellent job brother. Looking good and sick scrambles.”
What particularly impressed viewers was Lopez‘s agility and technical prowess despite being in his fifties. One commenter noted,
“In your 50’s and moving like that?! You’re my hero, dude!”
Combat sports veteran C.T. Fletcher added,
“BOTH GUYS ARE TOUGH! MARIO IS SENSATIONAL FOR 50! MY HEARTS ALWAYS GONNA BE WITH THE OLDER ATHLETE, BECAUSE IM A SENIOR CITIZEN 💪🏼.”
While Lopez didn’t manage to secure the $1,000 prize by taking Poullas down, his performance showcased the actor’s legitimate grappling skills and dedication to combat sports training, earning respect from professional athletes and fans throughout the community.
The viral nature of Poullas‘ challenge continues to generate discussion within combat sports circles, with technical debates about what constitutes a legitimate takedown adding another layer of engagement to the popular series.
