Rodrigo ‘Gracie’ Jr comes clean, admits real name is DaSilva

Following weeks of mounting pressure from the legendary Gracie family, the individual known in Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu circles as Rodrigo Gracie Jr has finally broken his silence to address the controversy surrounding his identity.

The practitioner has acknowledged that his “legal name. I was born in São Paulo, Brazil with named” Rodrigo da Silva, not Rodrigo Gracie Jr as he has been presenting himself for years.

The confession comes after Rose Gracie issued a scathing public statement exposing what she called fraudulent use of the Gracie surname. Rose Gracie had accused the individual of

“presenting himself as a legitimate member of our family, using the Gracie name to book seminars, attend events, and even open academies, falsely claiming to be our cousin.”

The revelation has left many in the BJJ community stunned, particularly those who had trained with or attended seminars hosted by the individual.

His admission that

“Rodrigo the Solsa Silva and I trained jiu jitsu since I”

was young appears to be part of a broader acknowledgment about his true background and training history.

Rose Gracie had previously emphasized that

“after extensive verification with direct family members and through other means, it is abundantly clear that we do not recognize any legitimate family connection with this person.”

She had described the situation as

“dangerous and unacceptable because assuming a false family identity is an act of bad faith that stains the Gracie name and undermines a legacy built with great effort over generations.”

The controversy had gained significant traction on social media, with several martial arts practitioners expressing their suspicions about the individual’s sudden emergence in the scene. One practitioner had noted they had

“seen him randomly on IG and wondered why I never heard of him. He came out of nowhere a couple years ago.”

Following the initial accusations, Rodrigo Gracie Jr had made his social media profiles private, fueling further speculation about his true identity. The BJJ community’s response has been largely supportive of Rose Gracie‘s efforts to protect the family name.

Rose Gracie had made her intentions clear in her statement:

“My goal is not to stir conflict, but to protect my family’s name, preserve the integrity of our legacy, and ensure our community remains safe and well-informed. I am open to dialogue, but I will not stay silent in the face of lies and fraudulent behavior that harms all of us.”
