Ed O’Neill on how he started Jiu-Jitsu: Jiu-jitsu reminds you every day that you don’t know s**t

Before he was a beloved sitcom dad on Modern Family or the grumpy shoe salesman on Married… with Children, Ed O’Neill was a skeptic. A skeptic of Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu to be exact. That changed the day he stepped into the original Gracie Academy in Torrance, California—dragged there reluctantly by his friend John Milius.

O’Neill didn’t think much of it at first. “I said to him, ‘What do you mean, martial arts?’ I wasn’t interested,” O’Neill admitted in an interview republished on SportsPolitika. Milius convinced him anyway and what followed was nothing short of a spiritual beatdown.

“I went in and got my a** handed to me by a guy who was 175 pounds. He put me in a chokehold and I couldn’t get out. I said, ‘I gotta learn this.’”

That moment ignited a journey that would span decades. What began as curiosity quickly evolved into a dedicated practice. Ed O’Neill didn’t just dabble in jiu-jitsu—he committed to it fully, eventually earning his black belt under Rorion Gracie after over 15 years of rigorous training. This places him in rare company—a Hollywood star who didn’t just pose in a gi for PR shots but who put in the time, got humbled and stuck with it.

As his acting career soared, BJJ remained his anchor. O’Neill credits the discipline for teaching him humility, patience and even for helping him survive the brutal grind of Hollywood. In fact, he compares the start of his BJJ journey to the early days of acting—uncertain, full of failure but ultimately transformative.

“Jiu-jitsu reminds you every day that you don’t know s**t,” he told SportsPolitika. “It’s the most honest thing I’ve ever done.”

Today, O’Neill is 78 years old and still trains. While he’s careful about injuries and no longer spars recklessly, he insists that the mental and physical engagement of BJJ remains just as rewarding. And as far as celebrity black belts go, Ed O’Neill isn’t a novelty—he’s the real deal.

What began with hesitation turned into a lifelong pursuit all thanks to the Gracies. Ed O’Neill may have played Al Bundy but in the world of BJJ he’s a black belt who earned every stripe.
