The martial arts community has rallied around former UFC star Ben Askren as he continues his recovery following a life-saving double lung transplant. The popular media platform BJJ Fanatics, which boasts 457,000 Instagram followers, has launched a crowdfunding campaign on gofundme to help cover the mounting medical expenses that lie ahead for the beloved athlete and coach.
Askren’s medical journey has been nothing short of harrowing. After spending over seven weeks in a coma, Askren finally opened his eyes earlier this month, offering a glimmer of hope to his family and supporters worldwide. The cause behind his lung failure was revealed to be a severe staph infection that devastated his respiratory system and turned his family’s world upside down.
The financial burden of such a medical emergency is staggering. With lung transplant procedures in the United States typically costing between $2-3 million and insurance companies often refusing to cover significant portions of these expenses, the Askren family faces costs for recovery, medications and post-operative care.
Daniel Vallimont, who is organizing the fundraiser, shared an update that captures both the relief and ongoing challenges the family faces.
“We are excited to share the news that Ben has successfully undergone a double lung transplant and is now beginning his recovery journey. This is a significant milestone but the road ahead is long and challenging.”
The organizer emphasized that while the immediate medical crisis has passed, Askren now enters a complex phase of recovery.
“The Fanatic family is aiming to raise funds to cover critical medical costs not covered by insurance including post-transplant care, medications and rehabilitation.”
the campaign states, with donations going directly toward these medical and related expenses.
The fundraising effort describes Askren as
“a beloved coach, friend, husband and father, has shown incredible strength throughout this ordeal.”
The campaign acknowledges the joy in seeing his progress while recognizing the continued support he’ll need during recovery.
Support has already begun flowing from notable figures in the combat sports world. UFC president Dana White pledged assistance to the Askren family during this challenging time.
However, the campaign has not been without controversy. BJJ Fanatics had to disable comments on their social media post after criticism emerged regarding their own inability to support Askren despite being a glowing financial success story and effectively distributing his content.
Founder of Fanatics Michael Zenga contribed $2,500 to the cause. As of the latest update, the campaign has raised $5,161 toward its $24,000 goal.
The fundraiser concludes with a heartfelt message of gratitude:
“Thank you for your love, support and prayers. Your kindness has been a beacon of hope for Ben and his family during this challenging time and we are grateful for your ongoing support as he embarks on this new phase of healing.”
