Neil Magny gets promoted to BJJ Black belt while eating birthday cake after UFC Vegas 108

Neil Magny celebrated multiple milestones simultaneously – enjoying birthday cake while receiving his Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu black belt promotion during the post-match press conference.

The veteran welterweight’s evening became even more special when he was surprised with both a birthday cake and his long-awaited black belt promotion.

“Is that a birthday cake right there?”

someone asked, leading to congratulations from everyone present. When asked how the promotion felt, Magny responded,

“It feels great. I mean, anytime you get any kind of toe of appreciation for hard work, I mean, it always feels good to get that reward.”

The black belt recognition came after Magny’s impressive ground work during his match, where he demonstrated his grappling skills by securing back control and pursuing submission attempts.

“Yeah, I really appreciate this. I mean, this is, literally 20 plus years in the making to get to this point,”

Magny reflected on the achievement.

The timing couldn’t have been more perfect, as Magny was celebrating his birthday just hours after the match.

“I mean it’s for me it’s getting back to my kids as soon as possible. I mean I’ve been away from them all week. Miss those little guys,”

he said about his celebration plans, prioritizing family time over Las Vegas nightlife.

This victory also marked Magny’s 23rd UFC win, placing him in elite company alongside grapplers like Max Holloway, Charles Oliveira and Andrei Arlovski.

“It’s great. I mean, this is one of those things that like I could have never said like this is the moment that I dreamed for myself,”

Magny said about joining this exclusive group.

The promotion held special significance for the grappler from Indiana.

“I mean, like if I had known that some high school kid training in the back of Indiana somewhere would, be a black belt competing for the UFC 20 years later, I would have never thought it,”

he shared, reflecting on his unlikely journey.

When asked to characterize this chapter of his life, Magny titled it “new beginnings.” After experiencing some difficult years, he expressed gratitude for the fresh start.

“I mean literally just turned a fresh page in about five hours from now,”

he said, referencing his approaching birthday.

The chocolate chip cake with frosting served as the perfect prop for this memorable moment, symbolizing the sweet culmination of decades of dedication to martial arts and his ongoing UFC career.
