A routine evening in a Cutler Bay apartment complex parking lot turned into a life-threatening encounter when retired mixed martial arts MMA star grappler Javier Baez found himself face-to-face with an armed attacker. What followed was a masterclass in restraint skill and compassion that has captivated viewers across social media platforms.
The incident began when 50-year-old Omar Marrero approached Baez’s vehicle and struck the car window with a knife before opening the driver’s door in an attempt to harm the seated MMA star grappler.
“He was out there screaming, going crazy. I think he was drugged up,”
Baez recalled of the initial encounter.
After escaping the first assault Baez thought the danger had passed. However Marrero armed himself with a second knife and charged directly at the former MMA competitor tackling him to the ground in what could have been a deadly confrontation.
This is where Baez’s extensive training in Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu proved invaluable.
“When you train so many times, it becomes just a reflex,”
he explained. Rather than escalating the violence Baez used his grappling expertise to control the situation.
“I put him in a chokehold and he kinda just let it go,”
Baez said.
“No one is worried about anything else but breathing when you are losing air.”
The surveillance footage which has since gone viral shows Baez successfully neutralizing the threat while maintaining remarkable composure. Once he had subdued Marrero he called law enforcement while keeping the attacker restrained.
“I was able to hold him down with my knee and call the cops,”
he said.
“He woke up and cops came and it was good. Easy.”
What makes this story truly extraordinary is not just Baez’s technical skill but his response in the aftermath. Despite facing serious bodily harm and having every legal right to pursue maximum penalties the BJJ black belt made a decision rooted in faith and forgiveness.
In a social media post reflecting on the incident more than a year later Baez revealed the depth of his compassion. He chose not to press charges against Marrero a decision that significantly reduced the attacker’s potential sentence from ten years to six months. His motivation came from his Christian faith and belief in redemption.
“Love your neighbor as yourself,”
Baez quoted from Leviticus explaining his philosophy.
“We’re all children of god and we all deserve forgiveness and mercy. You battle evil with good not evil.”
The MMA star grappler emphasized that his actions were purely defensive driven by necessity rather than aggression. His primary concern was protection not punishment demonstrating how martial arts training can instill discipline and restraint even in the most dangerous circumstances.
Marrero was charged with burglary and aggravated assault and held without bond at Turner Guilford Knight Correctional Center. However thanks to Baez’s merciful stance the consequences were far less severe than they could have been. According to Baez he received a sentence of 6 months, 9 years less than what he would’ve gotten had Baez pressed charges.
