Teen training under Danaher wins EBI after submitting UFC’s Bryce Mitchell

At just 19 years old Landon Elmore announced himself as one of Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu’s most promising young talents by capturing the EBI 25 lightweight championship with a dominant performance that included a submission victory over UFC veteran Bryce Mitchell.

The teenager who trains under John Danaher at New Wave showcased technical brilliance throughout the 16-man tournament finishing every single opponent with heel hook submissions. His breakout moment came in the quarterfinals when he faced UFC’s Mitchell.

From the opening seconds of their match Elmore demonstrated why he’s considered such a special prospect. He immediately attempted a flying triangle that forced Mitchell to defend desperately near the boundaries. Once they were reset to the center the young submission artist smoothly transitioned to a k-guard entry systematically working his way to Mitchell‘s legs before securing a heel hook that forced the tap.

The submission highlighted the technical gap between pure grappling specialists and mixed martial artists even highly skilled ones like Mitchell. While the UFC competitor had shown solid grappling credentials in his previous bout – advancing past JJ Bowers with a decision victory after threatening an armbar – he appeared overwhelmed by Elmore‘s specialized leg attack system.

Mitchell‘s tournament run began promisingly enough. He navigated his opening match against Bowers showcasing some offensive moments including that armbar attempt during regulation time. When the match went to overtime Mitchell‘s experience showed as he won by fastest escape time setting up the quarterfinal showdown with the teenage phenom.

However the second-round encounter revealed the stark difference in grappling specialization. Elmore‘s seamless transitions and technical precision proved too much for the UFC veteran who found himself caught in a submission system he couldn’t escape.

His path to the $20,000 prize and EBI lightweight title was paved with four consecutive heel hook finishes including victories over seasoned competitors like Keith Krikorian in the finals. The bracket featured several established names in the grappling world including two-time ADCC trials winner Ethan Crelinsten, Krikorian and Gianni Grippo.

Elmore‘s performance caught the attention of the sport’s biggest stars with Gordon Ryan taking notice of his student’s breakthrough moment.

“(Landon Elmore) had his 1st big breakout performace!” Ryan wrote on Instagram. “100% sub rate in regulation! What a highlight reel!”

The praise from Ryan carries significant weight in the Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu community. Training under the Danaher system has produced numerous world-class competitors and Elmore‘s emergence suggests the production line of elite grapplers continues.
