One Jiu Jitsu Academy has publicly clarified that Timothy Lee Peterson is no longer affiliated with the school following controversial social media posts Peterson made about conservative activist Charlie Kirk.
In a statement posted to social media, One Jiu Jitsu Academy emphasized that
“[Peterson] has not been employed by One Jiu Jitsu since March 2025”
and that
“any statements or actions he makes—online or otherwise—are his own and have no connection to our academy, our staff, or our students.”
The post also addressed the circulation of older videos featuring Peterson, noting that he is
“not an instructor, employee, or representative of One Jiu Jitsu in any capacity.”
The academy stressed its long-standing commitment to a non-political training environment, stating
“For over 10 years, we have built our reputation on hard work, respect, and community… We do not endorse or participate in political discussions, and we will never tolerate behavior that disrespects the dignity of others.”
Peterson’s posts, which have since drawn attention online, criticized Kirk and his supporters and included an image stating that
“[Kirk] did not love this country”
and listing controversial positions he had taken on social issues. In accompanying text, Peterson described Kirk‘s supporters as following a
“cult leader”
and criticized their behavior.
The timing of these posts is notable. Across the United States, several college staff members have recently faced suspensions or dismissals over comments made on social media regarding Kirk‘s death. Universities in states including South Carolina, Tennessee, and Mississippi have acted against employees who posted content deemed inappropriate or insensitive, highlighting the complex balance between freedom of speech and professional responsibilities.
For example, Clemson University suspended an employee after backlash from lawmakers over posts related to Kirk, while Cumberland University announced two staff departures over similar social media activity. University officials have consistently emphasized that these decisions follow investigations and considerations of the employees’ roles and the impact of their statements on students and the wider community.
Experts note that while Kirk was a polarizing figure with a passionate following, online reactions to his death—including celebratory or derogatory posts—have prompted scrutiny from employers, particularly in roles with public or student-facing responsibilities.
