Charles Oliveira submitted Mateusz Gamrot with a rear-naked choke in the second round of their main event at UFC Rio in Rio de Janeiro on Saturday night.
The victory came after Oliveira had lost by TKO to lightweight champion Ilia Topuria at UFC 317 in June. His record now stands at 35-11.
Gamrot replaced the injured Rafael Fiziev on short notice. He sprinted to the octagon during his entrance.
In the first round, Oliveira used front kicks and combinations to maintain distance. Gamrot eventually secured a takedown but Oliveira immediately attempted an omoplata. Oliveira then took Gamrot’s back as he attempted to escape. Gamrot survived until the end of the round.
In round two, Oliveira continued with front kicks while Gamrot threw combinations. Oliveira shot for a takedown, transitioned to Gamrot’s back and locked in a rear-naked choke. Gamrot tapped at 2:48 of the second round.
The submission adds to Oliveira’s record of finishes in the lightweight division. Gamrot took the bout on short notice.
