BJJ student breaks police officer’s leg after he photographed his wife doing squats

A confrontation at a gym in Belo Horizonte escalated on Thursday evening when a 29-year-old jiu-jitsu practitioner severely injured a 49-year-old off-duty police officer, leaving him with a broken leg.

The situation unfolded at a fitness center on Avenida Cristiano Machado in the Heliópolis neighborhood after the martial artist’s partner reported feeling uncomfortable during her workout routine. According to her account to authorities, she was performing squats in front of the gym’s mirror when she noticed a man appearing to film her from behind with his cellphone.

Upon being alerted, her companion approached the individual to confront him about the alleged inappropriate behavior. The encounter quickly escalated, with the jiu-jitsu practitioner accusing the man of harassment before performing a takedown that resulted in a severe leg fracture.

Witnesses reported that during the altercation, the martial artist could be heard shouting:

“That’s what you get for messing with a jiu-jitsu grappler”

When authorities arrived, they found the injured man on the floor of the weight training area, being assisted by his daughter. The man then identified himself as a military police officer and was transported to Hospital Belo Horizonte, where medical staff confirmed the fracture to his right leg.

The two parties involved offer sharply contrasting versions of what happened. The police officer maintains that he was simply exercising and using his phone to send messages during rest periods when he was suddenly attacked without provocation. The jiu-jitsu practitioner, however, claims the officer apologized during the confrontation and stated that

“he didn’t know the woman was married.”

The gym is equipped with security cameras, and footage from the surveillance system is expected to play a crucial role in determining what actually occurred. The Civil Police of Minas Gerais confirmed that the investigation is ongoing and currently being handled by the 2nd State Digital Duty Station.

The martial artist was detained at the scene on charges of bodily injury. As the case proceeds, investigators will need to determine whether the accused’s actions constituted justifiable defense of his partner or an excessive use of force against someone who may have been innocently using their phone.
