WATCH: BJJ Competitor gets DQ-ed for guard pulling taunt celebration at a Slovakia competition

A Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu grappler learned a harsh lesson about sportsmanship at a recent tournament in Slovakia where what should have been a moment of victory turned into a disqualification after a series of inappropriate celebrations.

Mansur Magomadov appeared to have secured a win over opponent Michal Trávníček with what looked like a bulldog choke submission. The scoreboard showed both athletes at zero points indicating the match had been quick until that moment. However, rather than celebrating with grace, Magomadov chose a different path that would ultimately cost him the win.

After securing the submission, the grappler began repeatedly throwing himself onto his backside with his legs spread wide, directing the gesture toward both his submitted opponent and the female referee overseeing the match. The referee initially appeared to ignore the display perhaps giving the athlete a chance to compose himself. But as Magomadov continued the taunting behavior multiple times, she was forced to intervene, taking him by the hand and physically moving him back several steps.

The decision was ultimately made to disqualify Magomadov despite his technical victory on the mat.

The reaction from observers has been largely critical of the grappler’s behavior. Many questioned what the athlete hoped to accomplish with such antics with some pointing out that karma delivered swift justice. Others expressed confusion at the display while some noted their approval of the referee’s decision to enforce standards of conduct.

One observer suggested the grappler’s coach would likely have strong words in private about the incident while another expressed satisfaction seeing this type of disciplinary action taken in no-gi grappling competitions noting it reflects standards more commonly associated with Judo tournaments.
