White belt bit himself to get opponent DQ-ed at a BJJ competition

In one of the most troubling episodes in Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu competition history, a white belt competitor allegedly bit his own arm to fabricate evidence of foul play and secure a disqualification result at the Sul Americano championship.

The episode occurred during a match between Davi Garros and his opponent, with Garros dominating the bout 7-0 with only 30 seconds remaining. What should have been a straightforward outcome turned into a nightmare when his opponent suddenly claimed he had been bitten. Without reviewing video footage, the referee disqualified Garros and awarded the match to his accuser.

Clear video evidence later emerged showing the opponent biting his own arm while in a controlled position. Footage from the official event broadcast reveals the self-inflicted bite occurring while Garros maintained a dominant position with no apparent reason for him to resort to anything illegal.

“After all the frustration of relegation, I got the video that reveals the truth: the opponent bites his own arm to fake foul and pull me out of the match I won 7-0.”

“Jiu-Jitsu taught me values, honor, and truth, and these are the principles I fight for now. I can’t accept that such a dishonest lie decides a medal and an athlete’s dream.”

The Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu community responded with widespread condemnation. Comments filled social media calling for long-term sanctions and questioning how such blatant deception could occur at any level of competition, especially in a beginner division.

Garros‘s mother, Luciana Garros, expressed both vindication and frustration:

“My son, I told you from the beginning that the God we serve does not fail. I told you that the truth would come out and that you would prove your innocence and the injustice you suffered. And there it is… the video clearly shows that your opponent cheated and dishonored the kimono he wears and the sport he claims to defend.”

Many commenters noted that referees should have been suspicious of a biting claim when the accused athlete was winning decisively from a dominant position.

What makes the situation particularly egregious is that the opponent reportedly celebrated the tainted victory and initially defended his actions on social media before the definitive video surfaced. Several community members called for sanctions not only against the competitor but also questioned the role of his coaching staff in either failing to address or potentially enabling such behavior.

The Confederation of Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu has faced mounting pressure to address the episode and apply appropriate penalties. Thousands of practitioners have tagged the organization demanding action and genuine enforcement of fair play.

For Garros, the episode represents more than a stolen medal.

“It’s not about a defeat, it’s about the lack of character and respect for the sport.”

“I’m not asking for victory back, I’m asking for justice and coherence with what jiu-jitsu stands for.”
