Ashton Kutcher‘s commitment to Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu has evolved into a family-focused routine rather than a purely personal pursuit. During a recent appearance on Live with Kelly and Mark his wife Mila Kunis revealed that Kutcher has been teaching their 11-year-old daughter and her friends jiu-jitsu as a form of self-defense training.
The actor recently earned his black belt after more than 12 years of consistent training under legendary instructor Rigan Machado. Kunis explained that Kutcher now organizes regular sessions where their daughter and her friends come together to learn practical self-defense skills. She shared during the interview:
“My husband started doing jiu-jitsu classes with my daughter and her friends to teach them self-defense.”
The sessions are not limited to just their daughter. Their nine-year-old son occasionally joins as well which has turned the practice into a shared family activity. While their son prefers traditional sports such as football baseball and basketball these jiu-jitsu classes have created a different kind of bonding experience that cuts across typical interests at home.
Kutcher’s training journey began in 2012 and progressed steadily despite balancing a demanding acting career and active parenting. The legitimacy of his advancement has been acknowledged by respected figures in the grappling world including Craig Jones and Joe Rogan who have both emphasized that his rank represents real time on the mats.
Kunis also joked about Kutcher’s pride in the achievement noting that he owns a cup that reads:
“just in case you didn’t know I’m a black belt”
Even though he claims he does not seek attention for it his decision to teach his children shows how seriously he values the discipline.
By passing on these self-defense skills to his daughter and her friends Kutcher is offering more than physical techniques. The sessions focus on confidence discipline and awareness which reflect the lessons he has absorbed through more than a decade of dedicated practice in Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu.
Kutcher has been slowly trying to come back to Hollywood following severe backlash both him and Kunis received for backing longtime friend and now convict Denny Masterson. Kutcher’s new show The Beauty premieres on FX in early 2026.
