In a highly anticipated grappling showdown that captivated fans, UFC middleweight striker Shara “Bullet” Magomedov faced off against top lightweight contender Arman Tsarukyan at ACBJJ Armenia on December 30th.
According to sources, the match ended in a draw after neither competitor could secure a submission during the six-minute round. But the real story emerged outside the cage: Tsarukyan’s elder brother Artur reportedly lost $100,000 on the outcome.
According to reports, Artur Tsarukyan, himself a wrestler, placed a substantial wager of $100,000 on his brother to defeat Magomedov, with a potential return of $115,000. The bet appeared legitimate, though the draw meant the investment was forfeited.
The matchup represented a significant challenge for both athletes. Magomedov, standing 185 lbs (84 kg) with a professional MMA record of 16 wins and one loss, is known primarily as a striker whose knockouts have rocked the martial arts world. For Magomedov, stepping into a pure grappling contest was venturing far outside his comfort zone.
Tsarukyan entered the contest at 185 lbs (84-85 kg), heavier than his usual lightweight fighting weight. The 29-year-old Armenian stands 5’8″ (173 cm) brought his elite wrestling credentials and a professional record of 23 wins and three losses. Ranked number one in the UFC lightweight division, Tsarukyan was competing for the third time in less than six weeks, having previously defeated Dan Hooker on November 22nd and won a belt at ACB on December 17th.
The atmosphere in Armenia was electric, with fans creating an incredibly emotional environment. Throughout the round, Tsarukyan demonstrated his grappling superiority, repeatedly taking Magomedov down and controlling position. Commentators observed Magomedov utilizing his striking base to defend, using the ropes to assist his defense and blocking Tsarukyan’s attempts with his legs.
Despite Tsarukyan’s dominant wrestling display and multiple translation attempts, Magomedov’s defensive grappling proved sufficient to survive the round without submitting. Under the competition’s rules, since neither star secured a submission, the bout was declared a draw.
