Diego “Pato” Oliveira has accepted his invitation to compete in the IBJJF Absolute Grand Prix, to the surprise of many familiar with BJJ weigh classes.
The announcement marks a significant step for Oliveira, who campaigned at 141 lbs (64 kg) during the 2025 season. He now enters an open weight competition where he will face opponents who outweigh him by 50, 80 or even 100 pounds.
Oliveira joins a roster of confirmed competitors that includes Victor Hugo, an ultra heavyweight who won an IBJJF No Gi World Championship during his black belt rookie season in 2019. Representing Six Blades Jiu Jitsu, Hugo has built a reputation as a complete athlete, pairing an effective guard with heavy top pressure.
The field also features Devhonte “Bones” Johnson of Unity Jiu Jitsu, who competes at super heavyweight at 215 lbs (97.5 kg). Nick Hartman, an ultra heavyweight competitor with no upper weight limit, has also committed to the bracket. Michael Pixley, another super heavyweight, is confirmed alongside heavyweight Javier Barter, who typically competes around 207 lbs (94 kg).
The size gap presents a clear challenge for the 141 lb Oliveira, but absolute divisions have often favored timing, positioning and decision making over raw mass. His decision to test himself against the sport’s largest competitors reflects confidence in his technical approach.
With the brackets still being finalized, additional announcements are expected in the coming weeks. The February 26 date gives competitors roughly seven weeks to prepare for one of the more unusual matchups on the competition calendar.
Open weight formats create matchups rarely seen in standard divisions. Lighter athletes rely on movement, guard retention and efficiency, while heavier competitors apply pressure, reach and positional control.
The Absolute Grand Prix takes place on February 26 at The Hangar in Costa Mesa, California, with the champion earning a $50,000 grand prize.
