Sarah Galvao Wasn’t Allowed to Promote Atos or Have Her Parents Behind the Scenes Due to the Recent Scandal

When Sarah Galvao stepped onto the Polaris 36 mat in Croydon England to defeat Libby Genge by submission her place on that card was far from guaranteed.

Polaris promoter Matthew Benyaun revealed that organizers had a genuine debate about whether Galvao should remain on the card at all given the controversy surrounding her family. In the end she stayed but not without conditions.

“We definitely had some discussion about whether to keep Sarah on the card in light of everything that was going on.”

The decision ultimately leaned toward fairness he explained in a patreon section of his podcast.

“We shouldn’t really punish the daughter for the sins of the father.”

However Polaris drew a clear line.

“We did put some stipulations down. We are not going to mention Atos and we also did not want Andre or Angelica.”

In other words Galvao was permitted to compete but the Atos name was off the table and her parents Andre Galvao and Angelica Galvao were barred from any behind the scenes presence at the event. The conditions reflected how far the fallout from the misconduct allegations against Andre Galvao has spread reaching even his own daughter’s competitive opportunities.

The timing could not have been more complicated for the Galvao family. Atos Jiu Jitsu HQ has been in a state of significant upheaval following allegations of misconduct by former student Alexa Herse. Andre Galvao has denied the allegations as false and retaliatory but the organizational damage has been extensive. The academy quietly updated its website to list Sarah Galvao as head coach alongside Michael Perez and Orlando Samson replacing a previous roster that had featured both Andre Galvao and Angelica Galvao in leadership roles. Alec Baulding was the first to publicly note the change.

The new coaching arrangement has drawn skepticism from across the BJJ community. Sarah Galvao received her black belt within the past year and while her talent as a competitor is not in question her experience running a major affiliation is. There are also lingering concerns that the restructuring may be cosmetic with questions about whether she would function independently or serve as a stand in for her parents.

Against that backdrop Sarah Galvao showed up in England and did what she came to do earning a submission victory on a FloGrappling broadcast card that also featured a headline grabbing moment from Ethan Crelinsten who used his victory speech on the FloGrappling platform to publicly call out UFC BJJ for a contract opportunity.
