WATCH: BJJ Black Belt Demotes Brown Belt to Blue for Disrespectful Behavior

A Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu instructor publicly demoting one of his students from brown belt to blue belt as punishment for disobedience and disrespectful behavior toward his mother.

AndrĂ© Seabra of Instituto Fazendo a diferença no Jiu-jitsu shared a video showing himself demoting his student Igor, described as a “champion,” of his brown belt rank and replacing it with a blue belt during what appears to be a formal ceremony in front of other students.

In the video, Professor Seabra explains his reasoning in Portuguese:

“If there’s one thing that makes us very sad, it’s when a student disobeys their teacher, right? There’s a great principle, it’s biblical, which is to honor your father and mother. So we need to fulfill this principle.”

Seabra reveals that Igor had disobeyed his mother and also ignored the instructor’s phone call addressing the issue.

“With that, the mistake was serious. He’s leaving the brown belt and going back to blue.”

The instructor emphasized that the demotion is temporary, telling Igor:

“When you regain trust again, you’ll return to your rank.”

The student apologized during the ceremony:

“I’m sorry.”

“I won’t do it again.”

In his social media post, Seabra wrote:

“Yesterday once again, I had to make a decision and this time with my champion Xerife, after disobeying his mother and me as well, as a consequence I demoted him so that he would understand the gravity of the mistake, of course it will be for a brief time, but enough for him to understand. Teacher is synonymous with care, affection, commitment, empathy, kindness, guidance and transformation.”

While demotions in Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu remain relatively rare, this is not the first time such incidents have captured attention online. Last year, a similar video went viral showing a student being demoted from blue belt to white belt for repeated lateness. This prompted widespread criticism, with many questioning whether the act aligned with BJJ’s core values and whether it violated federation rules.

In that case, the demoted student later responded with a mix of sarcasm and acceptance, admitting initial anger but acknowledging the lesson about punctuality. He even suggested he might compete at white belt level to quickly earn his rank back, leading some observers to suspect the incident was partly staged as a lesson in discipline.

Years earlier, MMA legend Enson Inoue made headlines when he demoted himself from black belt to purple belt, though he later returned to wearing his black belt after community response.

Belt demotions as disciplinary tools raise complex questions within the BJJ community about the appropriate use of rank, the role of instructors in students’ personal lives and whether public ceremonies serve educational purposes or strictily relate to student’s skill level.

While Seabra frames the action as a temporary teaching moment rooted in values of respect and obedience, critics of similar past incidents have argued that belt rank should reflect technical skill rather than serve as a behavior management tool.

The practice remains uncommon in Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu, where belts traditionally represent a student’s technical proficiency and time spent training rather than general conduct outside the academy.
