UFC featherweight Bryce Mitchell addressed a viewer’s question about Brazilian jiu-jitsu during an episode of his podcast ArkanSanity, offering his thoughts on what he believes is a growing issue within the sport.
The question came from a viewer who asked Mitchell whether jiu-jitsu had become “too gay” and whether it was still worth pursuing. Mitchell responded directly and said he believed there was some truth to the concern.
“Well, that’s a great question because to some extent it has been,” Mitchell said. “And some of these professors are teaching gayness.”
Mitchell went on to explain what he considers warning signs when choosing a gym, pointing to one practice in particular that he views as a major red flag.
“Number one thing is if they’re teaching you your first option in a match is to sit on your butt and scoot at the opponent,” Mitchell said. “It’s called butt scooting. If they’re teaching this butt scooting, they’re probably gay.”
He then clarified that he knows how to butt scoot himself but sees it as a last resort rather than an offensive tactic.
“I’m only going to butt scoot if I get knocked loopy,” Mitchell explained. “You won’t ever see me in a match coming out trying to butt scoot.”
Mitchell continued by describing the circumstances under which he believes the technique is appropriate.
“If I’m butt scooting, I’m hurting,” he said. “I’m clinging for my life if I’m butt scooting. Don’t criticize me if you see me butt scooting. It’s because I’m trying to get up. I’m getting held down. I do not want to be there.”
Despite his criticism of certain training approaches, Mitchell encouraged his viewers not to dismiss jiu-jitsu altogether and instead focus on finding a reputable coach and training partners.
“Once again, get you a legit coach,” Mitchell said. “Have you some legit teammates and don’t do none of that gay stuff. It’s only gay if you make it gay. Jiu-jitsu is cool. It’s straight, brother.”
