Duane “Bang” Ludwig’s promotion to Brazilian jiu-jitsu black belt carried special meaning. The former UFC competitor received the rank from Alberto Crane at Legacy Jiu-Jitsu.
Ludwig began grappling as a teenager, training in Colorado during Brazilian jiu-jitsu’s early growth in the United States. His path included work with respected coaches and martial artists, along with years spent competing in mixed martial arts and kickboxing.
Although he became known for his striking, Ludwig also built a notable submission record, finishing 14 of his 15 victories with a wide range of techniques.
For Ludwig, jiu-jitsu offers a direct way to measure ability. Reflecting on the meaning of “ultimate truth” in martial arts, he explained why grappling holds such a powerful place in his philosophy.
“Jiu-jitsu is the ultimate truth because there’s no lying on the mats and you could do 100% full bore on the mat every day and find out exactly what you’re made of, what they’re made of and what the ultimate truth is.”
Unlike striking practice, where drills and controlled work can leave questions unanswered, live grappling provides immediate feedback without requiring athletes to absorb repeated head contact. Ludwig said that, among the martial arts, jiu-jitsu offers the clearest test of a person’s skill, composure and character.
“Unless you’re actually fully expressing yourself in combat, you don’t know exactly where you stand,” he said.
The promotion also represented a new responsibility. Ludwig described a black belt as more than recognition for technical knowledge. To him, it is a tool for helping others improve their coordination, fitness, self-protection and personal growth.
“It means having a tool to teach someone the coordination of themselves, to stay in shape, to defend themselves, to protect themselves and or others,” Ludwig said.
He added that the rank reflects a long commitment to learning and carries an obligation to share that knowledge. Ludwig praised Crane’s academy for creating a welcoming culture focused on helping students become better versions of themselves.
