During a conversation with Lex Fridman, Khabib Nurmagomedov shared a remarkable story that illustrates the humble nature of one of mixed martial arts’ greatest legends. The tale centers on Fedor Emelianenko, the Russian heavyweight champion who made an unexpected appearance at a regional combat sambo tournament in Dagestan while holding the PRIDE championship belt.
The year was 2004, and a 15-year-old Khabib found himself at the Dagestan Open Combat Sambo Championship in Makhachkala. His father, Abdulmanap Nurmagomedov, had organized the event and sent invitations to various combat sports schools across Russia. Among those who accepted was Fedor Emelianenko, already established as the PRIDE heavyweight champion and widely regarded as the most formidable figh ter in the world at that time.
Khabib recalled the surreal experience of watching Fedor prepare backstage. The venue was modest, accommodating perhaps 1,500 spectators, with athletes warming up behind a partition wall.
Few people in attendance truly understood the magnitude of having a PRIDE champion competing in their regional tournament. However, Khabib knew exactly who Fedor was and what he represented.
“At that time, he beat Nogueira, beat Mark Coleman, beat Randleman. This was before his championship match against Cro Cop,” Khabib explained.
He watched intently as Fedor went through his warm-up routine, particularly noting something unusual. Fedor was meticulously warming up his nose and ears, paying special attention to his face in a way the young Khabib had never seen before.
Fedor had brought a thermos with him, and between his matches, he would simply pour himself some tea and drink calmly, as if he were at a casual gathering rather than a combat sports tournament. The image of the PRIDE champion sitting there with his thermos, completely composed before and after competing, left a lasting impression on the teenage Khabib.
Both Fedor and his brother Alexander made it to the finals that day. They faced Dagestan’s elite combat sambo figh ters, including Ibragim Magomedov, a heavyweight who had also competed in PRIDE.
Despite being the visiting competitors, the Emelianenko brothers dominated, with Fedor taking first place and Alexander securing second.
The significance of this event cannot be overstated. As Khabib put it, “It’s the same as a UFC champion now coming and fighting at the Dagestan Combat Sambo Championship. Can you imagine that?”
At the time, PRIDE was home to the world’s best heavyweight figh ters, and for its champion to travel to Dagestan and compete in a regional tournament was almost unthinkable.
For young Khabib, standing next to Fedor as he prepared, watching him compete, and witnessing his calm demeanor throughout was an invaluable source of motivation. The experience reinforced lessons about humility, dedication, and respect for the martial arts that his father had been instilling in him.
Reflecting on Fedor’s career, Khabib spoke about what made the Russian legend so captivating. Beyond his technical prowess, Fedor possessed an aura of calm intensity. He would enter the ring with an almost serene expression, then proceed to defeat giants of the sport.
This cold composure, Khabib suggested, had a psychological effect on opponents that went beyond physical intimidation.
