In a revealing interview, Dima Murovani, coach of grappling prodigy Nicky Ryan, has shed light on the challenging circumstances leading up to Ryan’s performance at the recent Craig Jones Invitational (CJI). Murovani’s insights offer a new perspective on Ryan’s showing against Andrew Tackett, which left many fans surprised.
According to Murovani’s interview with Morning Kombat, Ryan faced significant physical setbacks during the preparation for CJI. “When I entered the camp 10 weeks ago, Nicky Ryan couldn’t walk. His ACL buckled, and on the other leg, Craig Jones broke his foot,” Murovani explained. This startling revelation indicates that Ryan was essentially training without the use of his legs for a considerable portion of the camp.
Despite these severe limitations, Ryan’s determination shone through. Murovani praised his athlete’s resilience, stating, “Nicky Ryan did he came into train every day with basically no legs.” This commitment to training, even in the face of such adversity, speaks volumes about Ryan’s dedication to the sport.
The coach went on to describe a brief period of improvement around the four to five-week mark of the camp, during which Ryan showed promising form. “He looked like a world beater,” Murovani recalled. However, this progress was short-lived as Ryan’s injuries prevented him from maintaining this level of training.
In the four weeks leading up to the event, Ryan’s training was severely limited. “He couldn’t walk at all,” Murovani revealed. “We couldn’t continue training. He didn’t train for four weeks.” Ryan managed to come in once a week for a single round to maintain some level of cardiovascular fitness, but it was far from ideal preparation for a high-level competition.
Murovani’s revelations cast Ryan’s performance against Tackett in a new light. While Tackett’s dominant victory (with scores of 30-24, 30-25, and 30-25 from the judges) was impressive, it now appears that Ryan was competing at a significant disadvantage due to his injury-plagued preparation.
The coach emphasized that Ryan’s decision to compete despite these setbacks was a testament to his spirit. However, Murovani also expressed concern for his athlete’s long-term health, suggesting that addressing these injuries should be Ryan’s priority moving forward.
