In a revealing account, grappling superstar Gordon Ryan has opened up about the physical challenges he faced during the recent Abu Dhabi Combat Club (ADCC) World Championship. The 29-year-old athlete disclosed that he suffered a lateral collateral ligament (LCL) tear during his superfight match against Felipe Pena on the first night of the competition.
Ryan’s struggle began mid-match, but he managed to push through and secure a victory over Pena with a two-point score in overtime. The injury, however, left him in considerable pain and struggling to walk.
“I can like barely walk right now,” Ryan admitted in a behind-the-scenes vlog. “My body won’t do what it tells me to do.”
Despite the severity of his condition, Ryan was determined to continue competing. He sought medical attention, visiting an emergency room late at night in an attempt to receive a cortisone shot to manage the pain and inflammation.
The grappling champion’s dedication to his sport was evident as he tried to conceal his injury from fans and competitors. “It’s very important that people don’t see me limping now that I’m hurt for tomorrow,” Ryan explained, highlighting the mental fortitude required to compete at the highest level.
Remarkably, Ryan not only participated in his match against Yuri Simoes the following day but dominated the contest, winning by an impressive 21 points to zero.
This recent injury is just the latest in a series of medical issues that have plagued Ryan over the past year. He detailed a harrowing experience with an antibiotic-resistant strep throat infection that sidelined him for months and required the removal of his tonsils. Additionally, he underwent surgery to correct a deviated septum.
Further setbacks included a rib injury that forced him to withdraw from matches against Lucas Barbosa and Mason Fowler, as well as stomach issues that hindered his training for much of early 2024.
“This camp is so bad,” Ryan reflected, describing how he had only ten days to regain his timing and cardiovascular fitness before the ADCC event.
Despite these obstacles, Ryan’s performance at ADCC 2024 solidified his status as one of the most dominant forces in grappling. His ability to overcome physical adversity and still perform at an elite level showcases the mental and physical toughness required in high-level competitive grappling.
As Ryan recovers from his latest injury, the grappling community eagerly awaits his next move. The champion has already hinted at potential future matches, including possible bouts with Craig Jones and Nick Rodriguez, promising to keep fans on the edge of their seats as he continues to push the boundaries of the sport.
