Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu phenom Mikey Musumeci disclosed that a highly anticipated match between himself and former UFC featherweight champion Alexander Volkanovski was on the verge of becoming a reality at the Craig Jones Invitational.
Musumeci, a four-time BJJ world champion, shared this intriguing information during a recent podcast appearance with MMA legend Demetrious Johnson. The 28-year-old grappling sensation explained that the matchup was in the works and had generated significant excitement, particularly from CJI founder Craig Jones.
“Craig was really pumped about the idea of Volkanovski and me going head-to-head on the mat,” Musumeci revealed. “It would have been an incredible showcase of grappling skills from two different worlds.”
However, the dream match-up was not meant to be. According to Musumeci, Volkanovski had to withdraw due to unforeseen circumstances. Despite the setback, the BJJ star remained optimistic about the potential impact such a contest could have had on the sport’s popularity.
“A superfight like that could have really elevated the profile of BJJ tournaments,” Musumeci mused. “It’s a shame it didn’t happen, but who knows what the future might hold?”
The connection between Volkanovski and the CJI runs deeper than this near-miss superfight. Craig Jones, a BJJ maestro in his own right, has been a crucial figure in honing Volkanovski’s ground game. Their partnership was most recently on display during Volkanovski’s bout against Islam Makhachev at UFC 294.
While the Musumeci-Volkanovski showdown didn’t materialize, the CJI still managed to captivate audiences with its innovative approach to grappling competitions. One of the event’s highlights was an intergender match featuring Craig Jones himself against Gabi Garcia, which proved to be a major draw for fans.
As the BJJ community continues to buzz about what could have been, both Musumeci and Volkanovski remain at the top of their respective games. The tantalizing prospect of their paths crossing on the mat in the future remains a topic of excited speculation among combat sports enthusiasts.
