Jocko Willink: Keenan Cornelius is WRONG for Saying Rickson’s Level is Comparable to a ‘Tough Purple Belt’

In a recent podcast episode, former Navy SEAL and leadership expert Jocko Willink discussed comments made by jiu-jitsu black belt Keenan Cornelius about the skill level of Rickson Gracie. Willink strongly disagreed with Cornelius’ assessment that Rickson’s ability was comparable to a “tough purple belt” by modern standards.

As a reminder, Cornelius went viral several years ago when he told then podcast co-host Josh Hinger that BJJ has evolved and changed so much that one time GOAT Rickson would be a tough purple belt now:

“Their jiu-jitsu definitely was not as good as it is today,” Cornelius stated. “It’s probably like tough purple belt level.”

Willink, who has trained extensively in Brazilian jiu-jitsu, spoke from personal experience rolling with Rickson Gracie. He described Rickson as having a different level of skill and understanding that was immediately apparent.

“I had not felt anyone that felt like Rickson,” Willink said. “He was a different kind of human.”

The podcast host went on to explain that Rickson possessed a rare combination of natural physical gifts, deep technical knowledge passed down through the Gracie family, and an almost supernatural body awareness and connection.

“He has some connection to the whole thing that’s different,” Willink stated.

While acknowledging the rapid evolution of jiu-jitsu techniques in recent years, Willink maintained that Rickson’s abilities would still translate to the highest levels of the sport today. He likened rolling with Rickson to “a weird drowning scenario where no movement is doing anything.”

Willink cautioned against dismissing the skills of pioneering grapplers simply because the overall technical level has progressed. He argued that truly special athletes and martial artists like Rickson Gracie possess timeless attributes that would allow them to excel in any era.
