In a recent social media post, UFC Hall of Famer BJ Penn inadvertently made light of Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu world champion Mikey Musumeci while commenting on a viral meme.
The meme contrasted images of MMA’s Mark Coleman in his prime during the 1990s with a photo of a more youthful-looking man meant to represent 30-year-olds in 2024. Unbeknownst to Penn, the second image was actually of 28-year-old BJJ phenom Mikey Musumeci.
Penn initially expressed surprise at realizing the “jiujitsu guy” was involved, likely referring to Musumeci, before asserting “I’m sure he can handle himself.” He then went on to share his thoughts on masculinity, stating “The true mark of a man is how he handles himself in dangerous situations!”
In a follow-up comment, Penn expanded on the meme’s theme, recalling his own youthful bravado: “This is a fact. My goal at 15, was that when I’m 30, I can kick anyone’s ass in the whole world.”
The irony of Penn’s comments appearing to dismiss Musumeci’s capabilities was apparently lost on the UFC legend. Musumeci is widely regarded as one of the top pound-for-pound Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu practitioners in the world, with multiple world championships to his name.
This incident follows a pattern of controversial statements from Penn in recent years, including claims about dinosaurs and historical figures that have raised eyebrows in the MMA community.
The unintentional slight against Musumeci highlights the generational divide often discussed in combat sports, where perceptions of toughness and masculinity continue to evolve.
It also adds to a recenty conversation in which Musumeci poked fun at Gordon Ryan who looks decades older than him, due to alleged PED abuse.
BJ Penn held the record for the fastest BJJ black belt promotions for years. It took him only three years to earn his black belt from Andre Perderneiras.

Penn went on to become the first American to win a Jiu-Jitsu World Championship in 2000 and one of the greatest MMA pros of all time, winning three UFC titles in two different weight classes.
He was widely known for his leg dexterity and as the pioneer of the ‘straight-jacket’ the arm trapping system popularized by Gordon Ryan years later.
