Former UFC flyweight champion Demetrious “Mighty Mouse” Johnson recently discovered the intense training regimen of Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu world champion Mikey Musumeci. The stark contrast in their current training approaches has left Johnson questioning his competitive edge in the grappling world.
Johnson, who has been focusing solely on BJJ for the past 18 months, disclosed that he trains approximately 5 hours per week. This is a significant reduction from his previous 25-hour weekly schedule during his MMA career. The legendary MMA star explained, “It’s just a different beast now. My life is so much more than just fighting.”
However, Johnson’s modest training routine pales in comparison to Musumeci’s grueling schedule. In a recent interview, Musumeci revealed that he trains “every day” for an astonishing “six to eight hours,” followed by an additional “10 to 12 hours” of studying BJJ techniques.
The stark difference in commitment left Johnson visibly stunned. “How can I compete with these guys?” he exclaimed, citing his current focus on family responsibilities and personal interests.
Despite the disparity in training intensity, Johnson remains optimistic about his chances in BJJ.
“I’m gonna continue to do it, I’m gonna continue to do martial arts. It’s not like I’m gonna stop. It’s just, you know, a couple of guys that I talked to.. Urijah Faber said there’s only a short amount of time you get to be a professional athlete and to be able to compete at the highest level.”
As Johnson continues to explore his new passion for BJJ, the revelation of Musumeci’s intense training regimen serves as a wake-up call. It highlights the dedication required to compete at the highest levels of the sport and may prompt Johnson to reevaluate his approach.
