Ethiopian BJJ Gym Is Raising $2,500 For Mats, In Order to Help Ethiopia’s Youth Train BJJ Safely

In the heart of Addis Ababa, Ethiopia, a group of determined young athletes is defying the odds, pursuing their dreams through Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu and Mixed Martial Arts. Grace MMA, an extension project of KAO BJJ—Ethiopia’s sole BJJ team—has become a beacon of hope for 20 youth from economically challenged families in the Summit area.

These aspiring martial artists train with unwavering dedication on a concrete floor, showcasing their resilience and passion for the sport. Among them is Leul, whose ambitions stretch far beyond the gym walls. After experiencing both victory and defeat in local tournaments, Leul’s determination has only grown stronger. His dream of representing Ethiopia on the global stage is vividly illustrated on his school exercise book, serving as a daily source of inspiration.

“The program has transformed me,” Leul shares. “It’s opened up a world of possibilities. I can’t imagine a day without training. My hope is to succeed and pass on this opportunity to other kids.”

Another success story is Dagi, who found solace and strength in the program. Once a target of bullying due to his small stature, Dagi has blossomed into one of the gym’s most vibrant and engaged members, demonstrating the transformative power of martial arts.

Grace MMA offers more than just physical training; it provides a safe haven for these young athletes, steering them away from negative influences and towards a future filled with purpose and discipline. However, the lack of proper equipment poses significant challenges and risks.

To address this, Grace MMA has launched a fundraising campaign with a goal of $2,500. This amount would cover the cost of 60 square meters of training mats, creating a safer environment for the athletes to hone their skills. The new mats would not only reduce the risk of injuries but also allow for more intensive training sessions and the possibility of welcoming additional youth into the program.

In a gesture of gratitude, the gym plans to display the names of all contributors on a prominent wall within the facility. They are also accepting donations of BJJ gis, No-Gi gear, and MMA equipment to further support the athletes’ development.

The campaign, organized on behalf of KAO BJJ, represents more than just a quest for equipment. It’s an investment in the futures of these young champions, offering them a chance to pursue their passions and rise above their circumstances.
