WATCH: Jay Rodriguez submits Sean O’Malley’s coach Tim Welch at ADCC trials

BJJ has MMA cross overs all the time. It happens so much many of them fly under the radar.

Jay Rodriguez emerged victorious against Tim Welch, coach of UFC star Sean O’Malley, at the ADCC trials in 2022. The match, which was part of the early rounds on the first day of competition, showcased Rodriguez’s technical skill and strategic approach against a more experienced opponent.

From the outset, the bout was characterized by intense hand fighting and positional battles. Welch, known for his aggressive style, came out strong with heavy clubbing attempts. However, Rodriguez demonstrated superior hand-fighting technique, consistently winning inside position and effectively using level changes and fakes to keep Welch off-balance.

Despite being outsized, Rodriguez’s wrestling background was evident in his solid stance and ability to control the pace of the match. He consistently pushed Welch towards the edge of the mat, neutralizing his opponent’s attempts at foot sweeps and front headlock control.

As the match progressed, the intensity ramped up with both competitors searching for advantageous positions. Rodriguez’s defensive skills shone through as he adeptly defended against Welch’s attempts to secure a guillotine choke.

The decisive moment came in the final seconds of the match. With time running out, Rodriguez executed a perfectly timed shot, transitioning quickly to take Welch’s back. In a display of technical brilliance, he secured both hooks and, as Welch attempted to roll out, locked in a tight RNC for the submission victory.

This win was particularly impressive given Rodriguez’s relatively short time in BJJ, having only a year and a half of dedicated training by this point. The victory over an established black belt like Welch serves as a testament to Rodriguez’s rapid progression and natural aptitude for the sport.

Welch regularly trains with ADCC champion Augusto Tanquinho Mendes.

Welch has been dealing with a bit of controversy as of late, due to a set back in Sean O’Malley’s career.

UFC Hall of Famer Matt Serra criticized Sean O’Malley’s coach, Tim Welch, for ineffective cornerwork during O’Malley’s unanimous decision loss to Merab Dvalishvili at UFC 306. Serra, who coaches Dvalishvili, argued that Welch failed to motivate O’Malley, particularly heading into the final round when O’Malley was significantly behind on the scorecards. Serra expressed that Welch seemed more concerned about O’Malley’s feelings than pushing him to perform better, calling his coaching approach “sh*t.” He suggested Welch was exposed as a coach in this fight, lacking the urgency needed to help O’Malley turn the tide.

“This fight exposed him as a coach because when your guy is winning and knocking people out, sure, you look like a f*cking hero,” Serra said on “UFC Unfiltered.” “When your fighter is obviously losing the fight and he starts losing rounds, Tim Welch was, like, not wanting to hurt his feelings.

“‘OK, good round.’ No, you’re losing f*cking three rounds! You’ve got to get in his ass. You’ve got to say – he was afraid that he did not know how to handle his guy on that many rounds. And I thought his f*cking cornerwork was sh*t. So, he exposed himself. You (Dvalishvili) took care of business, and Tim Welch had no answers for his fighter.”
