WATCH: When a fake BJJ Black belt was exposed at the UFC Gym

In a shocking incident that sent ripples through the Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu community, a self-proclaimed black belt instructor at a UFC Gym in Flowermound, Texas, was exposed as a fraud. The event, which took place in 2015, was captured on video and quickly went viral, sparking discussions about the importance of credential verification in martial arts.

Justin Farwell, a BJJ practitioner, visited the gym not to train but to investigate suspicions about an instructor named Jeremy Varney. Varney had been claiming to hold a black belt in BJJ, a rank that typically requires over a decade of dedicated training to achieve.

During their interaction, Farwell questioned Varney about his qualifications. Varney’s responses were vague, stating he had received his promotion from “some guy” in Hawaii. This lack of clarity raised immediate red flags, as legitimate black belts can usually provide detailed information about their lineage and instructors.

The situation escalated when Farwell invited Varney to demonstrate his skills on the mat. Within mere seconds of light grappling, Varney suddenly cried out in apparent pain, claiming an injury. This abrupt end to their encounter only fueled Farwell’s suspicions, leading him to openly challenge Varney’s credentials.

The incident prompted an investigation by the UFC Gym franchise. Mauricio “Tinguinha” Mariano, a fourth-degree black belt and the BJJ program director for UFC Gym corporate locations, issued a statement addressing the controversy. Mariano revealed that they were unable to verify Varney’s claimed lineage or belt history with the Hawaiian BJJ school he had referenced.

As a result of the investigation, Varney was removed from his teaching position at the UFC Gym franchise. The organization took this opportunity to announce plans for enhancing their BJJ program across all locations, including a more rigorous instructor certification process overseen by Mariano himself.

The BJJ community rallied around this incident as a teachable moment, emphasizing the value of transparency and the dangers of misrepresentation in martial arts. It sparked discussions about how students can verify their instructors’ credentials and the responsibility of gym owners to ensure the legitimacy of their staff.

In the aftermath, UFC Gym reaffirmed its commitment to providing high-quality BJJ instruction across its network. The organization pledged to implement stricter standards and a unified accreditation system to prevent similar incidents in the future.
