Roger Gracie, one of the most renowned figures in Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu, has shared his insights on common mistakes made by beginners in the sport. In an interview, Gracie emphasized that copying techniques from YouTube without proper foundation can be detrimental to a practitioner’s development.
Gracie highlighted the importance of building a strong foundation in BJJ before exploring more advanced techniques. He cautioned that while it’s easy for beginners to find and attempt complex moves online, this approach can lead to the development of bad habits and leave practitioners vulnerable during sparring or competition.
“I agree. I think especially at the beginning, it’s very important that you don’t create bad habits. You need to have a very strong foundation; then you can learn anything you want without making silly mistakes. At some point, watching too many techniques on YouTube is bad because when you try them, you just open yourself up completely. You can’t defend yourself the way you should, and then you end up getting shut down on the mat. It’s always good to be open to trying to learn new things, but don’t forget your foundation. I think that’s why I might succeed in this area—because I have a very strong foundation. ”
“My basics are solid, so it’s hard for me to make silly mistakes. That way, I can learn anything new because I know how far I can go. That’s the tricky part—knowing how far you can go and when it’s time to retreat.”
He explained that a solid structural base allows practitioners to learn and incorporate new techniques more effectively without compromising their defense or overall game.
The BJJ legend also touched on the evolution of the sport, noting that it has become much more professional over the years. He observed that today’s competitors need to be well-rounded athletes, incorporating strength training and conditioning alongside their technical practice to succeed at the highest levels.
Gracie’s advice to beginners is clear: focus on mastering the basics before diving into advanced techniques. By doing so, practitioners can develop a strong foundation that will serve them well as they progress in their BJJ journey.
