The Gracie family’s unique naming convention is deeply rooted in the eccentric beliefs of Carlos Gracie, a pioneering figure in Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu. According to Rickson Gracie’s memoir, his uncle Carlos had a fascinating perspective on the power of certain letters, particularly R, K, and C.
Carlos Gracie was far from an ordinary martial arts innovator. A man of unconventional ideas and spiritual beliefs, he saw the world through a lens that combined mysticism, nutrition, and personal philosophy. He believed that certain letters possessed inherent power, which led to the now-famous Gracie naming tradition of using names beginning with R.
This naming practice wasn’t just a random choice but a deliberate strategy tied to Carlos’s broader vision of creating a clan of exceptional individuals. The Gracie family’s approach to naming was just one aspect of their holistic method of building a legacy. Carlos believed that by carefully selecting names, he could imbue his descendants with certain qualities or energies.
The tradition of R-names became particularly prominent as Carlos and his brother Hélio set out to create what they called a “clan of fighters.” Between 1932 and 1967, they fathered an impressive 30 children with eight different women, with 21 of them being boys. Many of these children bore names starting with R – like Rickson, Rorion, and Relson – continuing the family’s unique naming tradition.
Meanwhile Rickson Gracie named his kids Rockson, Kauan, Kaulin and Kron. Interestingly, Helio Gracie’s own name doesn’t respond to this tradition.
While the exact mystical reasoning behind the letter R remains somewhat mysterious, it reflects Carlos Gracie’s broader philosophical approach to life. He was a man who believed in the power of intention, psychology, and personal transformation – principles that were as much a part of his martial arts philosophy as they were of his approach to family and naming.
Today, the R-name tradition continues to be a distinctive marker of the Gracie family’s legacy, a lasting reminder of Carlos Gracie’s unique worldview and his profound impact on Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu.
