Olympic Gold Medalist in Freestyle Wrestling Helen Maroulis won blue belt no gi worlds

Olympic wrestling gold medalist Helen Maroulis added another achievement to her impressive athletic resume by winning the IBJJF No-Gi World Championships in the Adult Female Blue Belt Light division. Representing Unity Jiu-jitsu, Maroulis secured the gold medal ahead of Seika Rebecca Van Keuren from TDBJJ who took silver.

The victory came amid recent discussions about her participation at the blue belt level, where Maroulis had openly addressed concerns about her competition entry. “I started jiu-jitsu exactly five weeks ago, it was the first time I ever took a class,” Maroulis had explained before the tournament. “I have friends that do it, but like, never really watched it, don’t, like, didn’t even know the rules, nothing.”

Maroulis, who began her jiu-jitsu journey while recovering from a back injury, had consulted multiple professors and coaches before entering the prestigious Las Vegas tournament. “I asked around, and not once did anyone say this probably wouldn’t be appropriate for you to compete at Blue Belt,” she had stated.

The podium was rounded out by Samantha Carolina Ojeda from Charlotte Jiu-Jitsu Academy and Taylor Elaine Wingstrom of GD Jiu-Jitsu Association, who shared third place honors.

Throughout the lead-up to the competition, Maroulis emphasized her respect for Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu’s traditions, stating, “I deeply, deeply, deeply care about the culture of the environment that I enter into. I know that it’s not wrestling, and I’m not trying to bring my expectations or experiences with wrestling solely into this.”

This victory marks a successful transition into competitive jiu-jitsu for Maroulis, who joins other high-profile athletes like Pat Downey and Demetrious Johnson in successfully crossing over into the sport.
