Mackenzie Dern has once again captivated the MMA world, this time for a reason outside the cage. A series of provocative undergarment photos featuring the Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu black belt and UFC strawweight contender have gone viral, sparking widespread debate among fans and pundits alike. The images appear to be part of a collaboration with Juan Cardenas, an established artist and photographer known for his avant-garde projects.
Provocative photos
Cardenas, who has been an active artist for over two decades, is recognized for his work under the pseudonym. According to his website, his creative philosophy revolves around challenging conventional perspectives and pushing boundaries. He has exhibited his work in multiple cities and made a mark on the Las Vegas art scene, even being named the Featured Artist at the Las Vegas First Friday Festival in 2019.
Interestingly, images of Cardenas wearing a UFC lanyard have led to speculation that he might be affiliated with the promotion in some capacity. Dern’s photos are part of his January 2025 Inspiration Issue, a project aimed at blending high-fashion aesthetics with raw, intimate portraiture. Despite skepticism from some fans who initially believed the images were AI-generated or doctored, the sheer volume of authentic pictures has put those doubts to rest.
A Fighter Who Frequently Makes Headlines
This isn’t the first time Dern has found herself trending due to her appearance. She frequently goes viral during UFC weigh-ins, where her physique and charisma have earned her a devoted fan following. However, this latest buzz comes at an interesting time in her personal life, as she has been navigating rumored marital turbulence.
In November 2024, reports emerged suggesting Dern was heading toward a second divorce after she and her UFC husband, Antonio Trocoli, unfollowed each other on social media. While the two have since re-followed each other, Trocoli is notably absent from Dern’s online presence, raising further questions about their relationship status.
Trocoli’s Legal Troubles and Past Jealousy Issues
Antonio Trocoli’s name has been entangled in controversy beyond his marriage to Dern. On October 4, 2024, he was arrested for misdemeanor battery in an incident involving Dern’s ex-husband, Wesley Santos. According to Santos, Trocoli attacked him during a custody exchange involving their daughter, Moa. Santos alleged that Trocoli had a history of threatening behavior, even using Moa as an intermediary to deliver unsettling messages.
Witnesses and video evidence reportedly corroborated Santos’ claims, leading to Trocoli’s arrest. Santos later confirmed that Dern and Trocoli were married, although neither Dern nor Trocoli have publicly commented on their relationship status.
This wasn’t the first time Trocoli’s jealousy surfaced publicly. When UFC lightweight Bobby Green made a playful comment about Dern, Trocoli allegedly confronted him. Green later shared on social media that he had unknowingly been messaging Trocoli instead of Dern, describing the situation as amusing but odd.
Dern’s Focus on Career and Branding
Despite the personal drama, Dern remains determined to build her career both inside and outside the octagon. Ahead of her rematch with Amanda Ribas, she spoke about the importance of expanding her brand beyond MMA.
“I really want to work on my brand in tons of different areas. More merchandise, start building so that by the time I get to the belt, I have that big fan base and everyone supporting me. Sponsors, too—just getting better as a whole.”
She also acknowledged that she’s learning the nuances of media obligations and image control.
“And it’s funny—now that I have my fourth poster, I’m even getting picky, like, ‘That’s the picture they picked?’ Now I’m starting to get that little girl side of me, like, ‘Ah, they could have picked a more flattering picture,’ you know? So it’s cool. It’s such a pleasure.”
Emotional Support Dog and UFC Walkout Controversy
Dern has also drawn attention for her emotional support dog, Mac, who accompanies her to media events. The 130-pound dog has become a fixture in her routine, helping her stay composed during high-pressure moments.
“He’s like security and emotional, you know, emotional support. He helps me a lot, just being comfortable. I’m kind of trying to stay as calm as I can, and you know, I think what I most need in my fights is composure.”
During an appearance on The Ariel Helwani Show, Dern revealed that she had attempted to get permission for Mac to accompany her during her UFC walkout but was denied by the athletic commission.
“Yeah, I did [ask],” she said. “But the commission, they’re all like, ‘Oh, you shouldn’t be fighting if you have an emotional support dog.’”
What’s Next for Dern?
As Dern continues her campaign for a UFC title shot, her ability to market herself both as a mixed martial artist and a public figure will play a crucial role in her career trajectory. Whether through viral weigh-in moments, brand expansion, or unconventional media projects like the Inspiration Issue, Dern is making it clear that she intends to leverage every opportunity that comes her way.
She remains one of the most talked-about figures in women’s MMA.
