Andrew Wiltse has re-emerged online following months of controversy, legal battles, and social media bans. Despite facing professional setbacks and personal struggles, Wiltse is making a fresh start with a new YouTube channel, aiming to rebuild his brand and continue sharing his insights on Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu.
In mid-November 2024, Bird Wiltse shared concerning updates regarding Andrew’s mental health struggles, which had escalated into a crisis on Drummond Island, Michigan. Bird revealed that Andrew had been taken into custody, potentially for a psychological evaluation, and that he also had outstanding warrants. The situation also involved several of Andrew’s dogs, with one escaping and others facing the possibility of rehoming due to housing restrictions.
Legal Battle with BJJ Fanatics
Andrew’s frustration with BJJ Fanatics remains unresolved. He claims that the company attempted to damage his reputation and income by removing his instructional content, despite his contract stating that the materials remained his intellectual property. Wiltse alleges that he filed a small claims lawsuit against the company, demanding a $10,000 settlement to sever ties. He has since resigned himself to remaking his instructionals from scratch, potentially selling them through Patreon or other independent platforms.
Wiltse also previously detailed his fallout with Daisy Fresh, citing conflicts over his critical stance on certain training methods and the team’s resistance to him and his brother running a YouTube channel. The tension reached a breaking point when a planned collaboration with a prominent BJJ YouTuber was blocked, further isolating him from the group.
Rebuilding Through YouTube
Now, with most of his social media accounts banned, YouTube remains his last major platform. Wiltse has launched a channel and uploaded his first video, “The Key to Never Stagnating in BJJ,” where he addresses common challenges practitioners face, particularly at the purple belt level.
Wiltse discusses how practitioners often hit a plateau at the purple belt level due to a lack of continued learning and adaptation. He highlights that skill differences between purple and black belts are often minimal, with confidence and experience being the primary distinctions. Wiltse cautions against blindly following established techniques without experimentation. He encourages practitioners to take ownership of their style, focusing on creativity and innovation. Wiltse emphasizes the importance of physical conditioning and trying new techniques to maintain progression.
What’s Next for Andrew Wiltse?
Wiltse remains in a precarious position, both professionally and personally. While acknowledging the severity of his recent struggles, he is determined to regain his footing. His decision to re-release his instructionals independently signals a shift away from relying on traditional BJJ platforms. Meanwhile, his YouTube channel could serve as both a lifeline and a proving ground for his ability to rebuild his career on his own terms.
Only time will tell whether Wiltse’s resurgence will gain traction, but for now, he’s back—and he’s got plans.
