WATCH: Girl gets slept in BJJ competition, dad headbutts the ref

In an incident at a recent Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu competition in the Philippines, tensions escalated after a referee failed to notice a young female competitor had lost consciousness during a match.

The situation unfolded when the competitor in blue became unresponsive during a loop choke technique, but the referee, who had reportedly been officiating matches all day, did not recognize the emergency. The girl’s coach rushed to intervene, though his attempted wake up technique inadvertently caused her head to impact the mat.

Moments later, the girl’s father confronted the referee with a headbutt before quickly departing the scene. The incident sparked immediate chaos, with the girl’s team becoming increasingly hostile toward the official, who subsequently left the venue due to safety concerns.

A former referee who spoke about similar situations noted the challenges of officiating: “Long days with little breaks and countless complaints… Not excusing the referee, but offering an alternate view of what could have been going on.”

According to witnesses, the referee had been working without breaks throughout the day, leading to fatigue that may have impacted his judgment. “A bit silly to continue on if you’re tired when people’s physical safety is on the line,” one observer noted.

The incident has sparked discussions about safety protocols, referee working conditions, and appropriate conduct at youth competitions. The young competitor has since recovered from the incident.
