Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu legend Rigan Machado has developed a specialized training methodology for his high-profile celebrity students that prioritizes technical precision and minimizes injury risk. With a client roster that includes Ashton Kutcher, Keanu Reeves, Scarlet Johanssen, Vin Diesel, Usher, and Wiz Khalifa, Machado has created a unique curriculum designed to protect actors who cannot afford physical injuries that might compromise their on-screen appearances.
In a recent podcast interview, renowned Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu master Rigan Machado shared insights into his unique approach to training celebrities who need to remain camera-ready while learning martial arts.
Machado explained that when working with actors and performers, his primary goal is minimizing injury risks. After receiving a visit from an insurance company concerned about an actor’s potential injuries during filming, he developed a specialized training methodology.

His approach involves carefully breaking down techniques into controlled segments, focusing on technical precision rather than full-contact sparring. Machado strategically selects high-level training partners who can provide resistance while maintaining strict control and protecting the celebrity student.
“My job is to protect the actor and actress to the best of my power and knowledge,”
Machado explained.
In a surprising claim back in 2016, Machado stated that Kutcher could defeat none other than Conor McGregor, the former UFC champion, in a grappling match.
“I put all my money [on] Ashton Kutcher,” Machado told TMZ at the time. “I think he could do really, really good. He’s 200 pounds, 6-2, 6-3, he’s the best.”
The genesis of this approach came when an insurance company approached Machado regarding an actor filming a television series. Recognizing the potential career-ending implications of training injuries, Machado developed a strategic training method that carefully manages sparring partners and technical progression.
Key aspects of Machado’s celebrity training approach include:
1. Carefully Selected Sparring Partners
Machado ensures that his celebrity students only train with extremely high-level partners who can maintain technical control and minimize injury risks.
2. Technique-Focused Progressions
Instead of traditional full-contact sparring, students focus on specific technical drills and controlled movement patterns.
3. Gradual Skill Development
As students demonstrate proficiency and understanding, they are gradually introduced to more dynamic training scenarios.
Interestingly, Machado notes that once students reach a sufficient skill level, they can eventually train like traditional practitioners. Some of his more advanced students, like Ashton Kutcher, even enjoy sparring with professional grapplers like Craig Jones to experience high-level Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu.
This methodology isn’t just applicable to celebrities. Machado suggests similar approaches could benefit practitioners with physical limitations, injuries, or those seeking a more measured training progression.
By prioritizing technical precision, controlled environment, and strategic partner selection, Machado has created a training paradigm that allows individuals to develop Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu skills while minimizing potential physical risks.
