In a refreshingly candid social media post, renowned fitness expert and Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu black belt Dr. Mike Israetel has shared his recent experience with cosmetic surgery, offering followers an unfiltered look at his recovery process.
Israetel, known for his science-based approach to fitness and nutrition, underwent a procedure to remove loose skin from his lower back and flanks—a cosmetic issue stemming from his younger days when he intentionally bulked up to 270 pounds in his twenties.
“Surgery is VERY INVASIVE,” Israetel warned his followers while sharing graphic images of his post-operative state. “I feel absolutely like total s*it… but less like total s*it every day!”
The fitness expert’s transparent approach included posting photos of his recovery, showing surgical drains and compression garments—a level of honesty that surprised even his wife, Dr. Christie Israetel, who commented,
“I can’t believe you posted these pics.”
What makes Israetel’s story particularly compelling is his comparison between surgery and dieting. Despite being a respected authority on nutrition and weight management, he admitted,
“This is my first large scale cosmetic surgery and let me tell you… it’s WAY HARDER than dieting! Holy s*it dieting doesn’t hurt like this.”
Israetel emphasized that cosmetic surgery should be considered only after exhausting dietary approaches:
“Only get surgery if it’s worth it to you, you already dieted down, and you’re ready for one of the most discomforting experiences of your life.”

Post Liposuction images are available on Dr. Mike’s socials; however, due to the graphic nature, they’ve not been included.
While many followers expressed support and wishes for a speedy recovery, the post also sparked debate about cosmetic procedures in the fitness industry. Some questioned why someone with Israetel’s knowledge of nutrition and training would opt for surgery, while others defended his personal choice.
In response to critics, Israetel maintained his position as
“very pro cosmetic surgery”
while acknowledging the significant discomfort involved, noting his amazement at individuals who undergo multiple procedures.
The fitness expert expects a two-month recovery period before returning to his training regimen. Throughout his posts, Israetel maintained his characteristic humor despite the discomfort, even joking about the less glamorous aspects of his recovery.
His willingness to share such a vulnerable experience has resonated with many followers, who appreciated the honest portrayal of cosmetic surgery beyond the polished before-and-after photos typically shared on social media.
