At the South Texas State Fair in Beaumont, approximately 90 minutes outside of Houston, what began as a festive Saturday evening quickly descended into chaos as multiple altercations erupted near the Ferris wheel.
Video footage shared on Facebook captured the tense moments as several juveniles engaged in physical confrontations, with officers from the Beaumont Police Department swiftly responding to restore order.
The incident, which occurred this past weekend, showed young people involved in various scuffles throughout the fairgrounds. In one particularly intense moment captured on video, an officer tackled one participant to the ground and appeared to draw a weapon, though it remains unclear whether it was a taser or a firearm.
“Oh, the police there,” remarked the person recording the footage as law enforcement intervened.
The video shows officers attempting to separate individuals, with one policeman wearing a bike helmet taking decisive action by mounting a young male to the ground before drawing what appeared to be a weapon. Bystanders quickly scattered from the immediate area upon seeing the officer’s response.
Other portions of the video depicted young girls engaged in physical altercations, with blood-curdling screams audible in the background. At one point, a girl was knocked to the ground and subjected to repeated blows to the face before she could regain her footing.
Haley Morrow, a representative from the Beaumont Police Department, told local news outlet KFDM that the South Texas State Fair maintains strict protocols against disruptive behavior.
“The YMBL has implemented a strict zero-tolerance policy when it comes to fighting or disruptive behavior,” Morrow stated. “Anyone involved in any altercation will be immediately removed from the fairgrounds and issued a criminal trespass warning.”
Morrow emphasized the importance of parental supervision, adding, “We also want to remind parents that they should not be allowing their children to attend the fair unsupervised. Ensuring a safe and family-friendly environment requires cooperation from everyone.”
Due to police procedure, authorities could not confirm whether the officer in the video had drawn a taser or a gun during the incident.
Social media reaction to the footage was swift, with one user lamenting, “This is so freaking sad!” Another questioned, “Why can’t they just go to the fair and have fun?”
Some commenters defended the police response, with one stating: “It is not the condition nor the way the fair is operated which has caused these problems to arise. In fact, the Beaumont Police department has done an incredible job responding to these events quickly and effectively along with the volunteers who are constantly on surveillance.”
The South Texas State Fair remains open to the public through April 6, according to the event’s website. It remains unclear if any arrests were made or if anyone sustained injuries during the incident.
