WATCH: When Overeem won European ADCC trials in 2005

UFC veteran Alistair Overeem dominated the 2005 ADCC European Trials, submitting all his opponents and earning the title of “the best grappler in Europe” at that time.

Long before he became known primarily for his striking in the UFC, Overeem demonstrated exceptional submission skills that would later contribute to his impressive MMA record of 17 submission victories. What makes this achievement even more interesting is that Overeem ultimately declined his invitation to the prestigious ADCC World Championships due to professional commitments in Pride FC or K-1.

The footage from these trials shows a leaner Overeem efficiently working his way to a guillotine choke victory against Arben Latifi (brother of UFC light heavyweight Ilir Latifi). Despite nearly securing a kimura during the match, Overeem appeared to show restraint rather than potentially injuring his opponent’s shoulder. Instead, he transitioned to his signature guillotine choke for the finish.

What’s particularly notable in the video is Overeem‘s conditioning – after the match, he shows barely any signs of fatigue, not even breathing through his mouth. This level of physical preparation would serve him well throughout his career, though his endurance would change as he added significant muscle mass in later years.

It’s worth noting that European grappling was still developing in 2005, with most nations having only a handful of black belts. Nevertheless, Overeem‘s performance demonstrated his well-rounded martial arts foundation.

In a curious contrast to his early grappling success, Overeem has maintained his Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu blue belt status for seven years since receiving it in 2017, despite training with the respected Valente Brothers. This reflects his philosophy on belt promotions:

“It’s about being humble. It’s about starting on the bottom of the ladder, and progressing.”

Now at 43, and after recently retiring from professional competition, Overeem has undergone significant physical transformation. He attributes this change to becoming vegan after his nutritionist discovered parasites in his body, which altered his taste for meat.

While Overeem‘s career is likely in its final stages, his grappling foundation has been a crucial but often overlooked element of his combat sports journey. As one commentator noted:

“Alistair has been grappling for a long time… He might have one more surprise left before his grand finale.”
