In a playful matchup that highlights the vast difference between everyday fitness and Olympic-level wrestling skills, gold medalist Helen Maroulis recently faced off against popular fitness influencer Demi Bagby in a lighthearted “sock challenge” that has taken social media by storm.
The challenge, shared on Bagby’s account, showcases the two athletes attempting to remove each other’s socks in a series of short wrestling matches. Despite Bagby’s impressive athletic abilities, Maroulis’s world-class wrestling expertise proved too formidable.
“Honestly, Helen is terrifying,” Bagby commented on the post with a laughing emoji, acknowledging the skill gap between the two.
Maroulis, who made history as the first American woman to win an Olympic gold medal in freestyle wrestling, responded sportively: “My bet is on Demi for every other athletic challenge except for wrestling (my only chance against her).”
The video quickly garnered attention, with viewers appreciating both Bagby’s spirited effort and Maroulis’s obvious technical prowess. One commenter noted, “You can tell she’s taking it easy on you also! Very talented,” while another observed, “She played you like a harp! Great effort against the best!”
This fun exhibition comes as Maroulis continues to expand her grappling repertoire. The Olympic champion recently secured gold at the Austin Winter Open No-Gi competition, marking only her second Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu tournament appearance. Remarkably, Maroulis began her jiu-jitsu journey just five weeks before her competitive debut.
“I started jiu-jitsu exactly five weeks ago, it was the first time I ever took a class,” Maroulis had previously explained. “I have friends that do it, but like, never really watched it, don’t know the rules, nothing.”
Maroulis initially took up jiu-jitsu while recovering from a back injury. Her approach to the sport has been characterized by genuine humility and respect for its traditions.
“I deeply care about the culture of the environment that I enter into. I know that it’s not wrestling, and I’m not trying to bring my expectations or experiences with wrestling solely into this,” she stated.
Her rapid success in BJJ has impressed many in the grappling community, including legendary coach John Danaher, who recently welcomed Maroulis to train with his New Wave team alongside BJJ champion Gordon Ryan.
“One of the best parts of training is having immensely talented visitors stop by and work alongside us,” Danaher wrote. “It was truly fascinating to watch her game blend wrestling and her fast developing jiu-jitsu skills. Her wrestling style is very unique – lots of upper body controls and takedowns with footsweeps and truly superb transitions to the ground.”
As for the sock challenge, viewers suggested it could become “the next big thing,” with many tagging friends they’d like to challenge. Bagby, meanwhile, showed good sportsmanship throughout, even as Maroulis demonstrated why she’s considered wrestling royalty.
