Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu superstar Gordon Ryan has taken to social media to share his controversial thoughts on the UFC’s new grappling format, specifically targeting fellow competitor Mikey Musumeci’s performance and attitude.
In a comment on a video review someone posted, Ryan expressed his displeasure with how the UFC BJJ showcase has unfolded, particularly centering his criticism on Musumeci’s approach to competition.
“UFC BJJ is a cool idea, but really it just made me see how much I don’t like Mikey Musumeci,” random social media reviewer stated in the video. The reviewer went on to describe Musumeci as “super cocky for being like one of them leg lockers.”
Critique extended beyond just technical aspects, as he questioned Musumeci’s mental fortitude under pressure. “Like I know if there were a real fight and he went down the guard and started working and I just gave him a good pop, he would forget every bit of jiu jitsu that he knows,” the review claimed.
The video concluded with reviewer stating “He’s super autistic though.”
Ryan accompanied this video with a caption reading “I think UFC BJJ made everyone see how much they don’t like Mikey,” suggesting he believes the sentiment is shared among viewers of the grappling showcase.
Musumeci is prominently featured on the show and can be heard constantly yelling out coaching to the degree that he might be going a bit too far and basically telling on his own competitior’s plans.
This public criticism comes as the UFC continues to experiment with pure grappling content, attempting to showcase the technical aspects of Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu to mixed martial arts audiences. The format has generated mixed reactions from both competitors and fans within the grappling community.
Despite the criticism targeting Musumeci’s communication style, he’s enjoyed the biggest publicity bump from UFC’s latest venture. He’s added roughly 10,000 followers to his social media over the course of the inaugural season of UFC BJJ.
